As the first oil and gas profile higher technical school in Europe and Asia, the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) was founded in 1920. In September 2015, by order of President Ilham Aliyev, the University was named the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industrial University, which was tasked with training qualified personnel not only for the oil field but also for the entire domestic industry. Over 20000 students have enrolled today, studying degrees relevant to the oil and gas industry. As well as providing high-class academic facilities, the university also offers students access to an impressive sports complex containing a pool, football pitch and tennis courts. Since 2016-2017 the French-Azerbaijan University (UFAZ) has been established under the Presidential Decree at ASOIU. During that period, 143 students were admitted to the UFAZ, where all subjects are provided in English, with the opportunity to get a joint diploma from the University of Strasbourg and ASOIU. 2400 students have achieved their background in technical and engineering majors. One of the crucial steps taken by ASOIU for the synthesis of education and science in the industry is the creation of the "Eazi START" startup school. The aim of the startup school is to prepare a business project and build production requiring minimal investment based on innovations in science which is carried out together with talented students and teaching staff. At the same time there was established AzII-IT Academy under the umbrella of the University which purpose is to give a deep knowledge in the sphere of information technology. It would be better to highlight that one of the most significant achievement of Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University is a close cooperation with more than 200 universities overseas, and a joint BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) program within Siegen University in Germany, and a joint MBA program in Business Administration with Georgia State University in the United States.
The International department was established in 2015. After the establishment of the department ASOIU actively participated in number of Tempus, Erasmus+ and Mevlana projects and has developed its master and bachelor majors according to the Bologna process requirements. In order to extend its international partnership and internationalize education system the ASOIU builds cooperation with prominent international higher education institutions. During these years the existing network of cooperation among universities was strengthen. These projects contribute to enhancement of academic and professional staff proficiency, transfer scientific and scholarly knowledge on curricula development and use of ECTS.
