Gebze Technical University (GTU), first established in 1992 as Gebze Institute of Technology (GIT), is a research-oriented public university located in the Marmara Region of Türkiye, with the primary goal of accommodating the needs of the 18 organized industrial zones and over 50 R&D facilities in its vicinity. As one of the first ten Research Universities of Türkiye, a title awarded by the Council of Higher Education of the country, GTU has dedicated all its state-of-the-art research facilities and other resources to high-tech research and innovation as well as education, including the 9 undergraduate and 31 graduate programs it offers through its departments under its Faculty of Science (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Molecular Biology and Genetics), Faculty of Business Administration (Management, Economics, Science of Strategy), Faculty of Architecture (Architecture, Industrial Design, City and Regional Planning), Aerospace Faculty (Aeronautical Engineering), Faculty of Engineering (Computer Eng., Environmental Eng., Civil Eng., Earthquake and Structural Eng., Electronics Eng., Geomatics Eng., Chemical Eng., Mechanical Eng., Materials Science and Eng.) as well as its Graduate School of Education and Research Institutes of Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Earth and Marine Sciences, Transportation Technologies, Energy Technologies, Defense Technologies, and Information Technologies.
GTU has a research-oriented international faculty and student profile, currently with around actively-enrolled 4,650 undergraduate and 2,350 graduate students, and employing over 350 internationally-recognized academic staff. There are 187 research laboratories on campus, which are fully equipped with the latest technology, as well as 7 research centers of excellence. The campus of the university consists of 245,000 square meter green area, and is located within a 10 km-range of Gebze city center, 10 km of İstanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, and Tuzla Marina. The location of GTU, also with a Marmaray train station within the campus, makes it easily-accessible from both Kocaeli and Istanbul.
Gebze Technical University is committed to conducting advanced level of scientific and technological research in areas of prime importance including, but not limited to, renewable energy, climate change, artificial intelligence, digitalization, cultural heritage, biotechnology, health, sustainability, advanced materials, and nanotechnology. GTU Technology Transfer Office (TTO) and GTU Technopark, through which around 200 industry projects are conducted annually, facilitate university-industry collaboration and technology transfer.
In line with its international outlook, GTU was awarded the Diploma Supplement Label by the European Commission (EC) in 2009, and in 2023, it has applied to the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R) for the recognition of its implementation of the HRS4R Charter & Code.
