About

Hong Kong Metropolitan University is a comprehensive university focusing on professional, applied and practical academic programmes, adapting to market trends and meeting the needs of industry.  These programmes cover a broad range of disciplines from the Schools of Arts & Social Sciences, Business & Management, Education & Languages, Nursing & Health Sciences, and Science & Technology.

The University was founded in 1989 by government legislation as the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong.  In 1997, it became the Open University of Hong Kong, and in 2021, Hong Kong Metropolitan University.  In 2024, the University was designated as Hong Kong’s first university of applied sciences.

Today, the University has over 10,000 undergraduate students studying for a Bachelor's degree with Honours, and 3,000 students studying for the master’s degrees by course work, as well as a growing number of research degree students studying for a master’s or doctoral degrees.  The University also has students studying part-time at the various degree levels, in the face-to-face and distance learning modes.  The student population includes a diversity of students with different backgrounds, from 30 countries.  The University has been allocated around 40% of the total number of places under the Government'sStudy Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions / Sectorsfor 2025–26.

Our faculty academics come from different parts of the world.  They are committed to deliver quality programmes and conduct research in a variety of disciplines and subject areas.  In recent years, we are actively building research networks with researchers and scholars in other countries.  Meanwhile, the University continues to enhance the research infrastructure and capacity.   We have five research institutes and three research centres focusing on:international business and governance,innovative technology and sustainability,open and innovative education, public and social policy research,bilingual learning and teaching,digital culture and humanities, etc.  We receive funding from theResearch Grants Council's Competitive Research and Funding Scheme for the local self-financing degree sector, as well as other external and internal funding sources.  The University is setting up the Hong Kong Metropolitan University Shenzhen Research Institute, a laboratory in Shenzhen scheduled for operation soon.

The University is gradually expanding its campuses.  The Main Campus comprises 3 sites in Homantin, the centre of metropolitan Hong Kong.  A fourth site, serving as theHub for Community Health and Wellness, is under development.  Nearby, on the waterfront in Hung Hom is MU Tower, a recently acquired office tower to serve as the town campus.  Also in Hung Hom is MU88, a hotel converted into a student hostel.  A satellite campus at theKowloon Commerce Centrein Kwai Chung is the base for the University's professional and continuing education arm,Li Ka Shing School of Professional and Continuing Education.
