The University of Hyderabad is a Public University that was established by an Act of Parliament in 1974. It was awarded the status of “Institution of Eminence” by the Government of India in 2019. It has on its rolls 5322 students and 395 faculty. The University offers multiple programmes including Integrated Master's Programs (5 years) in both Sciences and Social Sciences, 2-year Master's Programs in various disciplines, and Ph.D. programs through 12 Schools of studies. The University hosts two prestigious UNESCO chairs, including the UNESCO Chair on Community Media and the UNESCO Chair in Vulnerability Studies.
These schools include the School of Mathematics and Statistics; School of Physics; School of Chemistry; School of Life Sciences; School of Humanities; School of Social Sciences; Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication; School of Management Studies; School of Medical Sciences; School of Engineering Sciences and Technology; School of Economics and School of Computer and Information Sciences.
It also has 17 centres that are involved in both teaching and research. Some of these include the Centre for Neural and Cognitive Sciences, the Centre for Health Psychology, the Centre for Women’s Studies, the Centre for Folk Culture Studies and the Centre for Regional Studies among others. The Centre for Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences is an interdisciplinary centre that deals with Solid Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and among other things works to create awareness about climate change and train students to solve climate science problems.
Some departments and centres also offer online courses that are open to a global audience. For instance, the Department of English under the aegis of the UNESCO Chair in Vulnerability Studies in collaboration with the University of Belfast organised, a 5-week online course, 'Ageing through Literature from the Global South and Global North’ recently.
The Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication School is unique compared to similar Departments across the country. It offers Masters-level courses in Dance, Theatre Arts, Fine Arts, and Communication and Doctoral programmes in Communication, Theatre Arts, and Dance. The Department of Dance is a pioneer in adapting traditional systems of training in classical dance styles of Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam for post-graduate studies at the University level. Apart from the core Faculty, artists and experts in various fields and guest faculty of national and international repute teach courses in the School.
